    Posted: Jul/31/2013 at 1:07pm

I am starting to plan a big snowboard roadtrip this coming winter.  I have the following in mind as of right now.  Rent an SUV in Iowa, drive out to CO and spend a week bouncing around to different ski resorts in CO.  Want to hit Steamboat, Breckenridge, A-Basin, Aspen…  or whatever gets dumped on while we are out there.  Are there any multi-resort passes that can be purchased for some good resorts out there?  What is the best company to go through for a rental SUV (price and options, including insurance).  What places would be good to stop at overnight.  Looking for cheap lodging.  Probably be 4 guys trying to do this on the cheap.

Post up your suggestions, roads/places to avoid.  Still early and this is probably going to be a very open ended trip.  Just want to get out there and play it by ear.  Thinking of Friday-Sunday off, lose a day for driving on each end.

you should go m-f and take a week off of work... crowds in colorado are horrendous and by re-adjusting your schedule i think your days riding would be much better spent riding than waiting in a lift line
MOAR powderz plz!

there's something new this year called powder alliance. essentially you buy a pass to one of the participating resorts and you get three free days at all other resorts. the only participating mountain in colorado is crested butte but there are twelve total all out west. might be worth checking out: www.powderalliance.com

If you want to do it as cheaply as possible, buy and Epic pass for $600 and ride Vail, Beaver Creek, Breck, Keystone, and A-Basin, as much as you want. $600 for a pass is only about 5 or so days of ticket purchases. M-F is of course the best options no matter where you go ride. Rent a condo in Frisco or Frisco for more central location to all the resorts, or rent a condo in Breck if you want to go out and party.

OR, say shtook Colorado and go to Jackson Hole and Taraghee. (MY choice)

Just did Jackson Hole last year, great place!  Trying to mix it up a bit.  I will be doing the Monday -Friday + maybe a day or two on the ends.  This is planned for a 8-9 day trip. Will look into the Epic Pass.

Any local places out there that sell discounted tickets?

Look at bouncing around in the Southwest part of the state.  Monarch, Crested Butte, Wolf Creek, Silverton, Telluride, Purgatory (Durango Mountain).  All fun mountains with much less crowds.

Or do the Epic pass thing and stay more or less in one region.  As others mentioned, I would try to time it so that your ride days are M-F and weekends are your travel times.  You'll get more riding in.

You don't even know what a resort looks like anymore unless you happen to drive by one on your way past itLOL

FWIW, I think Crested Butte is the best ski area in the state.  When it's on that place is just amazing.

And Ctoma....

Really???

Just had to go there didn't ya?  LOL

crested butte can get pretty crowded around christmas but it should be clear anytime the rest of the year including weekends. it's worth noting a lot of trails dont open up until after the new year

Sounds like I will have to add Crested Butte to the list.  I looked at the epic pass, and there is a 7 day epic pass that might be perfect.  However, it doesn't include some of the mountains I really want to hit.  I will have to keep my eyes open for deals.  Keep the suggestions coming.

Commisar

Just get the full epic pass and make it worth your while by flying out to Tahoe for a long weekend at some point.  It's a good excuse to make more than one ski trip this winter.  And it's a good deal either way and you can also skip any ticket lines in the morning and  dick around with the epic mix stuff too.

But if you are going to be down in the san juans hit me up, we've got a good crew staying in telluride the first week of march and I'm planning to have at least one day at silverton.

And not to threadjack but scorer get your splitter dialed I'm hoping killclimbz will guide us for some pillow smashing on vail pass that first weekend in March.  He has promised it will be deep this year so the wife and I are going to blaze through that direction before our telluride trip.

I would love to take more than one ski trip.  Work schedule and financially I am unable to.  Going to be going to Tunisia next summer for a friend’s wedding and plan on taking 2+ weeks of traveling around Europe after the wedding.

I am sure Scorer will get out with us when you guys are here.  Dude can move.  Cross your fingers that Vail Pass is in and safe enough to go play on.  It's been two seasons since I've done some serious smashing there due to the danger.

There is a pillow spot at Bert I know of.  Scorer has been to it.  It is also a lot of fun.

The Tesla system looks sweet.  I think I am going to pick up the Afterburner's for this season if all things work out.  Looking forward to getting rid of pins...

OP -- you're threadjacked, get over it.

Back to the topic at hand:

Boy I am due for a new pair of Sparks . . . but I just got all our decks laced with the aluminum brackets and pins last year, the wife is probably going to keep me away from the magnetos until next season at least

Well the Tesla system comes with everything.  You can just say you are buying a pair of bindings.

I guess the only thing that is extra would be crampons, and I think you do need to buy new ones for that system.  You shouldn't need ski crampons in March in Colorado anyway.  Unless I take you out to the Panic Attack Trees at Bert and the snow line is fairly high.  Then you really want crampons on that crossing...Shocked

I always have Mr. Chomps in my pack, just in case, and they've saved my ass a number of times when I didn't think I would need them. And you definitely need a different type of crampons with the new system, they seem like a better interface with the heel lifters from what I recall.

Yeah you do need different crampons.  I played with the Tesla system at SIA.  I should have said they don't come with crampons.  I talked with the Spark guys recently.  Evidently they have made a few refinements to the system since I saw it.  Looking forward to getting my paws on them.

You'll be able to leave the crampons in the car for Vail pass.  If we need crampons for that, we will be drinking beer next to a warm fire within a couple of hours instead...

I was under the impression the new system worked with existing pucks and brackets, but if it comes with everything you need than thats even better.

It doesn't work with the existing brackets.  From what I saw at least.  So it'll come with those.

You are right that it uses the existing pucks.  I don't think it will come with those, but it is not like they are super expensive to purchase on their own if you need too.
