Just curious (don't make this political) but do any of you guys pack like an AR-7 when you ride backcountry?

For what, like bears or something? Or like a gang of bandits on snowmobiles?  Lol, just joking.

If you have room with your pack, it would probably be a good idea.  Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!

There was a large thread on firearms here at TS...Don't know what happened to it. Was a good thread.  Wasn't about boarding w/ a firearm, just about what firearms you own in general.

Bears are sleeping in the winter...
I do not, but If i frequented areas where there would be known drug smuggling, wolves, bad people in general I might rethink that.... handgun, no rifle.

I don't, mainly because of the above stated: bears are asleep in the winter.  I don't take my spray then either.

I guess lions are still awake and just as scary, so I still may someday, I just havne't felt the need yet.

pretty sure there aren't many people running drugs in the mountains through the snow on a pow day in non lift accessed country, it is realistically about as safe from anything a gun is going to protect you from as you can get in the mountains or otherwise.  OP your a bit ridiculous and this is coming from a gun guy.

If you're in true backcountry, where there isn't anything around (lifts, lodge, etc) then I can't see why it would hurt. Wild animals don't care about a human's sense of perceived safety. Just ask any hiker that's survived a mauling by a large animal and I'm sure they'll say they wish they had a firearm.

Or, if you get lost or stranded you could fire off a shot to let people searching for you if they are getting close or not.

And the wolves and mountain lions are a great reason, as others pointed out already.

Well I guess the case is to better be safe than sorry although I hope you never have to use it ever.

bringing a AR to protect yourself during back country riding seems a little excessive, I would just bring a handgun, avalanche beacons and beer.
never encounter dangers besides tree wells and out of control snowboarders.

mountain lion is a terrible reason for a rifle unless you're hunting it, if it attacked you you would never with a full pack and gear, carrying ski poles, skiing have time to bring your rifle on target, and once it got to you you couldn't use it. much much better off with a high powered handgun and a knife with a sheath that you just have to pull on it to get it out. Much better off spending your money on good avi gear, avi classes and always bringing a friend who has a beacon and knows how to use it.
