Can't believe it's almost that time of the year again. It's been in the 80's here recently and to think resorts are already claiming opening dates. Crazy!

Too early to think about opening dates, you have to enjoy the warm weather while it last otherwise it is a really long 3 months, or 2 months if you go when they open one run on Nov 1st.

Let's see if the almanac is right on the mark this year.  LOL  It would be nice to have a long season because last year was a bust.

The eves are getting a bit cool and the first frost has occurred in the mountains of Maine so it is time to start getting excited about the new season. Lets hope for a snowy New England this year.

Open Snow (BA) is predicting an average snowfall winter for Tahoe with a dry fall and then picking up in the Winter Months so basically the opposite of last year.

He is saying the closest analog is 09/10.

He is pretty good at seasonal predictions, as far as these things go, as long as I have been following him.

Still early in the year for predictions so hopefully things shape up towards the better side of average.

Most resorts have been closing earlier than in past years, around the 3rd weekend of April, even when they have enough snow to go longer. Since the crowds vanish, it just doesn't make financial sense for them to continue.

It's getting closer and closer to opening dates.

Northstar employee told me at the Skifest in SF that they think they have enough snowmaking to still open 11/22. Snow forecast between then and now is pretty bleak, so it'll probably be just a couple white ribbons.

@ Burningdragon -- It's looking like Ober Gatlinburg will open just in time to see the blown snow pack decrease significantly. Temps in the low to middle 50s later this week and temps in the middle 60s by this weekend and early next week don't look promising for more snowfall or snow making.

yeah not looking good but at least it will be colder so hopefully snow making can increase.

any news about Killington? Its my first trip up to VT to snowboard and I'd hate to make that 10 hr drive and the high cost of the entire trip go to waste because they aren't making a lot of snow.

Now 0% chance of snow in the next week at Tahoe. Webcams show they're all trying to make snow. Anyone know if Heavenly has more capacity than Northstar? Trying to decide which to go to.

Killington has more than just a couple trails open. Killington is skiing/riding top to bottom on 18 trails, with 4 lifts spinning, as of this posting. It's looking like they're off to a good start this season, especially considering I believe they were the first mountain on the East coast to open and they've been skiing/riding since I think October 24th-ish? Today is Killington's 22nd operating day of the 2013/2014 season. Hopefully it's a good sign of things to come this season for the New England skiing/riding season! Happy trails.

Dang it... Red Lodge was hopefully going to spin the lower lifts on the 23rd & 24th as a little early bonus time... but they've now cancelled that plan.  I guess it's still White Friday for me then!

Friend is going up to Tahoe today, so I told him to do a snow dance up there. Sadly, forecast is for rain this week, which will probably wash away all the man-made snow.

Apparently latest model runs say snow starting Tuesday evening...GFS has 3-6 inches whereas Euro and Canadian are in 1-2 feet range...so lets hope for the latter which will boost opening weekend!

Update: now range is 3-12 inches...hopefully closer to 12
