Waterproofness of Outerwear?

I've checked out both Burton and Bonfire, though there are still more outerwear to come and the problem in making a decision is that I tend to do a lot of snowboarding where there is a lot of slush like at Grouse Mountain.  I 15,000mm for a coat and pants enought with 10,000g breathability?  will the water eventually soak through let's say if you your just sitting in the slushy snow?  I know that Gortex is totally waterproof but dammit, the one's from Burton and Bonfire with Gortex material are very plain jackets and they are very thin...  unless any of you guys know some coats with a Gortex outerlayer and down-filling which i really can't find anywere.  I dont know why Burton/Bonfire doens't make a pimped out coat with nice@ss designs of Gortex fabric and inner-layer of goose down filling, they really shoud.

And to answer your question on why the Gor-tex fabrics are so plain. Almost all the companies out there have very plain gor-tex jackets. Most people who are buying that technical of a jacket aren't looking to be flashy on the hill. They want it for the features. A gor-tex jacket doesn't need insulation beacuse of the breathability of the jacket and the 3 layer laminent that is used to construct the jacket...I know it seems weird that a non-insulated jacket can keep you warm but it can. Also most people who where gor-tex are all about wearing the proper layers: a great base layer, a secind layer that is usually fleece and then their jacket. I think a 15k mm with 10k breathability will be fine....like Jared said don't spend the day sitting in the snow.

thanks guys for such a quick reply!  yah, i don't intend to sit in the snow too much but sometimes when im waiting for friends, im usually sitting down to rest my legs and wait for them to get to the chairlift.  if it is quite a warm day, i find after a while of waiting for them, my pants starts to get wet.  i will heed the advice and either go for 15000mm waterproof or else the Bonfire Mission which is 3L gore-tex, check this out: http://www.bonfiresnow.com/1-catalog/products_detail.aspx?id=1300

I just grabbed Sessions gore-tex pant 05-06.  for 140.  That should allow you to sit in slush if you have to.  I agree with the staff.  Base layer, Fleece/hoody, outerwear.

You don't have to spray it every time... every couple of times or when you feel the need for it.... of course you can spray it, like the ppl who like to wax their boards every time they ride..

i use some scotch guard on some old pants that started to lose their waterproofness.  pants still works fine. i save those for friends who dont have their own pair of pants.

i do it every 5 or so times i go

i spray the whole pant at the beggining of the season and then during the season i just spray the butt, knees and down by the ankles.(where it gets wet the most)

you guys are getting pretty interested in this spray.. not sure what X mm my pants are, but sometimes when i sit on the snow waiting for my friends, i can feel it slowly gettting moist... lucky for me i have an inner fleece lining on my pants so i have to be sitting there for like 30-40 minutes.

if you try the spray, make sure you get a good quality kind. I bought a cheap bottle of no-named scotchguard at walmart and it ended up turning my a pair of my old gloves (black and gray) to a yellow green. kinda like this color Also try spraying it on a part of the clothing that isn't noticeable first to see what it will do. i woulda been pissed if i had sprayed it on my jacket first

yea, i've tried a few different kinds and that cheap kind was the only thing that did that. I will have to look for the mcnett kind and give that a try

Scotch-gard and Nik Wax are both good ones to use

well the "just gore gloves" i think are all gore tex

and the ones with inserts well, just have inserts, not full

my gloves started turning after i sprayed them, but they were really noticeable after they dried
