    Posted: May/15/2007 at 1:16pm

JUNE 1st Deadline : Winners receive Free Boards that they design! Please help by giving any input, you don't need design skills.  Simply make some suggestions to current designs or add your own concepts.

Design specs: we are working to get more defined graphic file specs. But here's what we have so far:
- Illustrator Full Size (ie: a 153 boards needs to be 153cm x 25.5cm etc)
- 150 DPI
- Any photo elements need to be 150 DPI Full Size
- More defined to follow...
We all want our own snowboard, and thru project 13 anyone with 1200 dollars can make there own pro model.
We wanted to make a snowoard that rides unbelievable and everyone can afford.  We are working with Capita to make a true twin in a 152, 156, and a 156 wide.

Capita makes one of the best true twin tip boards on the market and we are stoked to be able to have a production run of these boards made for Sierra's first production snowboard.

We are also going to make a 157 that the founder of Capita believes is there best all mountain board and one that I plan on riding next winter.

Finally for the big guys we are making one more wide board in a 162.5

So all we need is the creative energy to spring from this thread to create 5 graphics for the five boards mentioned above.  Lets not forget the base as we brain storm our ideas.

Post your ideas, concepts and designs in this post and allow all involved to help evolve the design.  If your designs are used you will of course be recieving a freshly pressed snowboard.

agreed, a little more info on what you want the design to incorporate. Also, do you want them just uploaded as jpgs into this thread? Or somewhere else?
thanks!

The design should be whatever you want it to be.  There are no rules because that would stiffle creativitly.

As for the format, I will ask Blue.  But will give you the details as soon as we have them.

I posted this thread 5 minutes after talking with Blue about what boards we wanted to make.

As for time I have a feeling we are going to need to have something in less than a month.

I love that Line rider image, I wonder if that would make a great graphic for a top sheet.  The creativety on that game is unreal.

Definatly upload your images, thoughts, schetches, anthing on this thread.  It does not have to be finished just throw you ideas and work out there and will see where is goes.  We got nothing but time until it snows.

Hmmmm... diecut. Simple simple simple...

Can we get a subset topsheet for the ECR's =D.

I never sat down to finish any of my designs for all the contests I posted up, only thing I ever submitted was the RideKillington design. No excuses this time around!

can i get a decent copy of your logo? you can just post a jpeg or something, just big enough or hi res enough to blow up w/o going soft.

i stole the gif from the first post, but it's way too small.

You could use this: http://www.sierrasnowboard.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6844&KW=%2Eeps&PN=4

Unless you wanted it with the gradients / embossed look.

Heh, sorry man, I didn't want to make you think that I have any say or authority over what goes on the board. I was just thinking about it in a production point of view. Since most bases are diecut, (Each color of the base is cut out like a puzzle then put together) It would take a very long time for the diamond cutter/plotter to cut all the small dots/blotches on the base that you had on the first, and it would probably be impossible for a person to figure out which peice fits where. This is why most snowboard companies don't make their bases as high detail as the top sheet.

For the companies that do have crazy graphics on the bottom, they use a clear base and print the graphics on one side using silkscreen or sublimation, and you see the graphics through the opposite side... Though this method is nice to have crazy graphics and detail, it lacks the vivid and bright colors that really pop out at you. Some companies even use both methods on the same board. The Burton Vapor is mostly diecut but, a small section of the base is silkscreened onto a clear peice that is also diecut and peiced together... thats probably another reason why the price of that board is so jacked up.

Since everyone is concerned about the price, I think the diecut method is the way to go. Especially because I don't think Sierra will want thousands of these boards produced at a time. A silkscreened base is only worth it when you have a larger amount of boards to make.

I did a bunch of research on this because I've been tempted to make my own board... but this is the next best thing.

Sorry for the long post, but just thought everyone should know a little bit more about the boundaries and limitations of what they are designing before they design something crazy.

But yeah, Trevinous, I think your graphics are kickass. It has nice pop. The new base is much better but still has some questionable areas that I really can't tell if it's do-able or not because I've never used a diamond cutter/plotter. I guess Capita can answer that as this project progresses. But nice job nonetheless. Heh, I can't wait to see other ideas.

Awesome!  And it will be a Capita board?!  Nice!

What about a board with hundreds of small pictures of people's trip to the mountains?  You could post request for pictures on Craigslist.  I have no artistic ability so that's all I got.

No matter what you do I am in!  157 Please.

Just one thing.  Are you hiring?  I need to start saving now.

^^ I really like the base on that second one.

I'm curious how this'll affect Capita.  I don't know how aware other people are of this, but a lot of people in snowboarding retail HATE Sierra because of the way they operate.  Sierra's business model is to buy gear in bulk to get it cheap, which allows them to sell cheaper than the competition and still make a profit.  Wholesale is typically around 60% retail (at least for Burton), but I would guess that Sierra gets stuff at less than 50%l.  Much like other big business like Walmart and Barnes and Noble, a lot of people in the business take issue with that that big inventory strategy.  Given that Capita is a fairly niche company, I'm curious if other shops and more core boarders will accuse Capita of "selling out."
ROLL ON, BISHES.

Is it indeed difficult to make a complex base, as Metal Gear Ray stated earlier and therefore simpler is better?  If that's the case, I would think my submission earlier could/should perhaps have what was designated for top be on the bottom (and vice-versa).

Of course that is, if anyone liked it...

You guys are awesome. I like all of the graphic ideas so far. Outstanding work.

A few things we are going to need to work as a team is some basic high resolution logos.

As word of caution, in dealing with some custom graphics ideas, they will have to be high resolution.

I think a bare minimum of 100 pixels per square inch. Probably 200 pixels per square inch or so would be better. If there are any graphic design people who have created images this large, pipe in.

I am not sure as to what will be exactly required on our part, but I am sure the bigger and finer, the better.

Keep it up guys!
