i bought it earlier today and it sounds like i made the right choice. i'm glad i didn't have to go elsewhere to get the longer one. works better this way.
thanks for chiming in, especially with detail. you both (and everyone else who took time to answer) helped a lot. if i had a decent shop around i could go in a discuss this stuff with them, but there are no dedicated snowboard shops in NYC except for the big B. and somehow i don't think they would want to talk much about the Mullet.
the quiver is complete for this year, hopefully longer. THANK YOU.

You really need to keep in mind what you are doing. I usually ride much longer boards than other people. It seems that there is a large misconception that shorter is better due to the large increase in freestyle domination in the industry. True, short increases manueverability;however, I tend to ride as large as possible for all aspects of riding, including park.
Although I do not have a park specific board this year, I would opt for a medium-stiff 159. 162 for all-mountain freestyle. 164 for all-mountain freeride. And ~170 for pure freeride. (Note: I weigh 200 lbs at 6'0" and ride agressively)
The powder game gets a bit more complicated with choices like the Malolo and the 1986 Mullet. Keep in mind the misconception that longer boards necessarily ride powder better, and you have a bit of confusion. I actually opted to get the Malolo in a 162 instead of a 166. But this was because of specific circumstances. The Malolo is designed to be a very versatile freestyle/powder board. I wanted a board that I could easily throw 5's and 7's on, and still rip through the pow. Because of the design of the Malolo, you can actually downsize a bit from your "normal" board. The 162 is perfect for me. However, my fiance does not do 5's and 7's and prefers a better powder experience. She jumped up a couple cm from normal. I would have done the same if it weren't for my specific application. The Mullet is very similar in design, so you should think the same way.
Just keep in mind what you want. From your prior experience, I see no reason not get the 160. The 160 is not too short for freestyle, and it will be great in pow.
