This is Old school - Legends of Snowboarding!
Monday, April 9th, 2007Tom Burt
Some days in life are more special than others. Moments occur on those days that change an otherwise ordinary day, into an extraordinary one. On Saturday, March 31st, I had such a day. Hearing that Tahoe’s Donner Ski Ranch was to host a Legends of Snowboarding competition, to be contested in a hand dug halfpipe complete with highway hits, I, along with FSM Editor Colin Whyte and Associate Photo Editor Adam Renfree opted to take advantage of our day off from the FSM board test to scope out the scene. What we came to witness was an incredible display of time warp-age and an epic confluence of timeless snowboarding superstars, outfitted with authentic outerwear of their respective era and riding retardedly amazing boards of yesteryear, all of which needed to be pre-93 to enter.
The riders list included Terry Kidwell, Tom Burt, Andy Hetzel, Mike Basich, Mike Chantry, Temple Cummins, Chris Roach, Keith Kimmel, Jim Moran, Bob Kline, and Jeff Brushie among others. As for the outfits and the rides, I’ll let the photos do the talking.
I think this shot says a lot.
MC’d by World Cup legends Don Bostich and Dave Duncan, the contest was as pure in format as the era from which it came. Each rider had two runs to show the judges their stuff, then the course was opened up to a 25 minute jam session. Winner take all by way of overall impression, $500 cash prize, made up of contributions from all the contestants. Just like the old days. Even the old rules were observed, a la, no inverts!!
Temple Cummins shifty stalefish
What followed was a surreal sortie of classic style and superb skill (it ain’t easy riding a 20 year old board with a 16 inch stance and no highbacks). Grasser methods, truck drivers, boned out japan airs¦it went on and on. Too much to keep track off as it was all one could do to capture the action on video and film.
Tahoe loc Tim Manning rocks this Gnu in this glorious mini pipe.
In the end, Andy Hetzel took the top prize with a back to back 540s, though it was so hard to pick a favorite. Afterwards, awards were held on the sun deck, while Shawn Farmer’s band Farmaggedon rocked out. Best day-glo went to Mike Chantry and Pat Bridges, respectively because they were the only one’s that kept their outfits on long enough to be recognized. Local rippers also got some trophies and swag for their efforts during the Public session. Lifetime achievement awards were given to Bob Kline and Mike Judge Dread Chantry for their amazing contributions of soul and resource to not only Tahoe, but the snowboarding community at large.
Quite literally, all the riders were amazing, not only to watch, but also to speak with and hear their stories. It was an honor to be amongst such a colossal collection of snowboarding’s godfathers and I look forward to next year.

Punk Rock + Skate + Snow = Sessions.
Friday, April 6th, 2007In 1983 a young skater/snowboarder/surfer from Santa Cruz started a retail shop in San Jose, the epicenter from which a skateboarding revolution was going to shake the world. Joel Gomez, Sessions Founder and CEO, has lived the culture of action sports and punk rock for his entire adult life. His commitment and the company’s commitment to the true roots of the action sports lifestyle are reflected in the history of how the brand has evolved into what it is today.
The Sessions story is a reflection of the past legends who have shaped it and the young athletes who make Sessions what it is today.
We are so stoked to have Sessions in our clothing family. The spring/summer collection features original artwork by Russ Pope and signature pieces designed by pro skater Corey Duffel. Brandon McLean, of the Projects wakeboard camp, has added his personal touch to the graphics of the Project boardshort. Lots of cool stuff this season, so check it out!
