Travis Rice joins Quiksilver

January 25th, 2007
Huntington Beach, CA”Quiksilver, the leading brand in boardriding, today announced that it signed snowboard icon Travis Rice to a multi-year apparel and accessories sponsorship deal. Travis, who also rides for DC and LibTech snowboards (both brands of Quiksilver, Inc. (NYSE:ZQK)), is one of today’s most versatile and accomplished snowboarders and is a perfect match for the Quiksilver snowboard team.
From the top of the mountains in Alaska to the scaffolding jumps of Munich’s Air and Style, the 24 year-old superstar has shown the world he is a force to be reckoned with. A top tier competitive rider with multiple X-Games medals, Travis has a great ability to transcend and lead in multiple disciplines which is a testament to both his personality and strength as a snowboarder. In 2006 alone, he took first place at the 2006 Air and Style with an unprecedented “double back flip back-side 180″, with another first at the Tokyo Nissan X Trial after landing a “front-side double cork 1080.”

Travis is also renowned for his creativity and relentless motivation as a filmmaker. He has channeled his passion for the mountains and the art of snowboarding into the production of his best-selling snowboard film “Community Project” and the upcoming “Shedding Light”. Despite his non-stop travel schedule and the pressures of being a world-famous professional athlete, Travis remains a positive and inspiring role model for his fans.

Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver, commented, “I am so amped to finally have Travis on the Quiksilver snow team. Travis emulates everything Quiksilver represents as a brand. He is a real mountain rider with great style. He is an icon, a great representative of boardriding, and he will, without a doubt, continue to shape the imaginations of young riders and the global youth culture as a whole. Travis has been in the family for a while. He rode for Rossignol back in the day. And we are excited to have him wearing Quiksilver along with his DC snowboard boots and LibTech boards.”

Travis added, “I am truly excited about all the opportunities that lie ahead within this new found partnership with Quiksilver. I have had the great fortune of working with DC and LibTech and my amazing experiences with these brands give me full confidence in my decision to complete the Quik family circle. The resources, open mindedness and the general business philosophy of the company go hand-in-hand with my aspirations in snowboarding. I love to shred and appreciate the world wide community that shares that simple fact.”

Vail Session Super Slopestyle

January 16th, 2007

For lack of a better intro, we’ll start this thing off with Dingo’s quote of the night: This has been the most amazing snowboarding on a slopestyle course ever, ever, ever. In case you’re two years old, that’s three evers, which means he’s serious. The setup was a line of four kickers ending in the crazy skatepark-influenced rail jam zone of last night’s Steel and Sky Rail Jam. The jumps were obviously the key point of the night, and with a prize money total of $80,000 on the line, they were taken full advantage of.

Jonas Carlson started off the night with a smooth backside 1080, and things only progressed from there”he almost pulled a switch frontside 1440 at the end of the night. David Benedek threw down a clean line of all four nines, and Andreas Wiig stepped everything up with his first run”a backside Rodeo 9, switch frontside 1080, Switch backside 9, frontside 1080 combo”could things really get any more ridiculous? The answer is yes, yes they could. Capita’s Blue Montgomery aptly remarked that snowboarding has reached video game level after watching Jonas’ run of three 9’s, a 10, and a full boardslide around the C-wall, a run that landed him no higher than 6th place”the bar has been raised. Capita’s Dan Brisse then attempted a double-cork 1260, and Sammy Luebke ended what was looking like a solid night with a Backside 9 attempt resulting in a broken arm. Oh yeah, and then Benedek went switch backside 9, to backside 9, to switch frontside 9, to frontside Double-Cork 1260 like it was no big thing”yeah, that happened. With five minutes left, Kevin Pearce was sitting in third and greased three 10’s and a switch backside 9, but Chas Guldemond eeked him off the podium last minute with a dirty final run of the first BS 1260 ever done at The Session followed by a McTwist on the QP. Benedek and Andreas were the obvious top qualifiers throughout the night, but in the end it was Andreas who came out on top.

DB's Cork 1260!! First Ever stomped at a contest in North America

Well, I’m fairly certain that’s the most rotation-heavy paragraph I’ve ever written, which is fitting, since I was getting dizzy just watching this thing. There were lots of firsts, lots of Bud Light, and lots of Sketchy-D yelling for some girl named Geena outside the VIP tent. Well, I guess I could keep going, but I don’t think anybody really wants that, so let’s just end this. It’s slideshow time.

Slopestyle Results:
1. Andreas Wiig”93.7 points
2. David Benedek”90.7 points
3. Chas Guldemond”84.3 points

DC’s Travis Rice Wins Nokia Air & Style 06

December 8th, 2006

(DC Snowboards) Last weekend nearly 30,000 people turned out to Munich’s Olympic Stadium for Nokia Air & Style 06.Travis Rice DC proudly sponsored the event once again, and DC Snowboard Team Member Travis Rice took home the win amidst very stiff competition. As one of the biggest events of its kind, the event was truly everything you’d want from a weekend, including a Snowboard Big Air comp, Freestyle Motocross battle, and some of Europe’s top music acts.

Nokia Air & Style was the first big snowboard comp of the year, and the riders were fired up to show off the tricks they had dreamed up during the off-season. This meant one thing for the fans: a great show. 1080’s, 1260’s, double backs, and double corks were just some of the tricks being thrown out across the big kicker, ensuring that riders were going to have to fight hard if they wanted the Nokia Air & Style win.

T.Rice hits the kicker.

As if the snowboarding Big Air event wasn’t enough, Nokia Air & Style 06 also featured a similar knockout style freestyle motocross competition, featuring the likes of DC’s Nate Adams. The good thing about this year’s event set-up was that the FMX course was weaved into the snowboarding course, a design that sent freestyle competitors over the Big Air’s second fun kicker. For the fans, this meant that the event was way easier to watch. Nate, who was last year’s champ, just missed the bar and took third place this year.

Things got really heated when it came down to the final few rounds in the elimination style snowboarding comp. T.Rice progressed through round one with a double corked 1080, but really had to step-up in the final battle as the rest of the guys unleashed some gnarly ones, including a frontside double cork 1260 from David Benedek and a frontside 1260 nose grab from Antti Autti. But, when Travis stomped a double backflip 180 the crowd (and the rest of the riders) went bonkers”T.Rice was declared the winner.

We’re currently two snowboard comps deep into the 2007 season, and DC’s Travis Rice has won them both: first Icer Air in San Francisco and now Nokia Air & Style 06 in Munich. Keep it up T.Rice!
