8/7/2013 11:14:59 PM Not ignoring that at all, mate! I do like the idea of the 85mm because I also shoot a lot of video and those lenses are supposed to be very good at that too. From what I read, the 1.8G's autofocus is pretty fast so it should be ok to use it for sports photography. My only concern is that (again, from what I read) because my camera is a DX is would perform as a 127mm lens which would make it really hard to use it indoors...
8/6/2013 7:39:27 AM Thanks for that! I've put them on my watch list but to be honest I don't like my chances of getting a bargain that good on ebay. At $400 it's almost worth buying a refurbished one from Nikon from what I've seen... I had a look at the Tamrons and they do stack up nicely. I'll see if I can find one at a decent price but in reality I'd prefer to go with the Nikon lens just 'cause if I ever want/need to sell it, it should give me a better resale value.
8/6/2013 4:57:16 AM hahaha I did give it a try but it still doesn't come naturally... oh well, hopefully in time. As for the 70-200, I just missed out on an awesome deal on a 70-300 VR last Friday... a mate had it for sale and I didn't know, went for $250!!!! It would have been great if I had it with me on the day. I had to pretty much only take pictures of the boxes and a part of the straight because the rest of the track was simply too far. Also, thanks for the tip re the manual focus! Will def give it a try. A lot of the pictures I tried to take with the AF turned out sort of like this In my opinion, lots of potential... but in the end, blurry as hell.
8/5/2013 8:41:19 PM Had a go at shooting some racing action over the weekend. Not gonna lie to you, folks... not easy! hahaaha The Kit lenses don't focus fast enough unfortunately and we hardly had the sun out at all which didn't exactly make things easier either. Anyway... Unfortunately the Kit lens are bit too slow... I'm sure a better photographer can work around that but I struggled. I even tried recording a video but as you can see, it's hardly something to write home about... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZX_kPRpXrk
7/23/2013 10:22:42 PM Yellowstone? Hmmm... I'm guessing free diving is a no go then.
7/23/2013 8:18:13 PM He's racing V8 Supercar here atm... but he seriously sucks at it. Plus it seems he's already managed to piss half the paddock, his own team included. The man can ride but he's a whinger... will always be.
7/23/2013 7:33:27 AM Where are those blue holes? Pretty amazing shots!
7/23/2013 3:44:24 AM That side has a ton of info! Thanks a lot!
7/22/2013 5:31:53 PM I'm leaning towards a Nikon 70-300mm VR. I know it's not an amazing piece of glass but it's cheap enough and it 'should' suffice for what I need. I can get a a refurbished one from Nikon for $340, can't beat that. It has VR which is something I think is a big plus and the fastest focus speed amongst the ones I would consider (55-200/55-300/18-200). I'll still use it on a tripod most of the time and if I didn't want to shoot motorcycle races I'd probably go with the 200mm... but I'm pretty sure it won't be enough.
7/22/2013 5:18:41 PM There was a video of the crash on youtube but you can't see much of it because of all the spray (which is obviously what caused it too). Still looked pretty nasty though. RIP. Btw, remember what I said about Stoner a while back??? http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/sport/sportresults/MotoGP/2013/July/jul2213-stoner-to-test-factory-honda/
7/21/2013 12:22:00 AM Experimented with the camera a bit yesterday, there's lots of cool stuff you can do with these SLRs, huh!? My newbie best newbie attempts so far: Manual focus and low light... my nemesis!
7/20/2013 11:21:35 PM I might be getting a bit carried away here given the man's injuries... but I reckon Lorenzo will be a podium contender AT LEAST! His pace during Q1 was solid fast. Not blistering but he's not far behind and he did multiple fast laps in a row... pretty much the only rider to do so. I reckon if Marquez jumps to the lead, the race is over though. If Rossi and Bradl can stay in front for 5-6 laps, they stand chance then.
7/20/2013 1:17:07 AM Amen to that! haha such a hard learning curve. As is the basics aren't enough, composition is a killer to get right. Good lenses = better photos, so when you do invest, buy quality lenses. Tripod and ND faders, nd grads are great for landscape photography (A must ). If you haven't got it yet, buy a 50mm lens So good and the 50mm F1.8 is SO cheap. Both nikon and canon make them and they are around $120 AU but are very cheaply built. They produce some killer quality photos thou.  [/QUOTE] Well, it sounds like I'm on the right track then... bought a cheap body so I could spend a little more on lenses/filters/tripod/etc. But I haven't bought anything yet 'cause I'm at that stage I'm so lost I don't even have doubts yet! hahaha Seriously though, I was looking at some 50mm f1.8 and from what I read, the "G" is the one to have on the Nikon series but they're are around $100-120 more. The good thing is I have 2 mates who bought the same camera so we'll just buy different lenses and creat a mini pool for us. I'll get the 50mm, someone else will get a 35mm and the last guy insisted on getting a 70-300mm. We race motorcycles and that'd be pretty handy so I'll "let him" buy it! hahaha We'll get our own filters/tripods and etc though. My camera came with the 18-55 lens (they opted for the 18-105 bit more exxy so I passed) and that's what I'm trying to learn with at the moment!
7/19/2013 6:27:49 AM Wow... some amazing pictures in this thread!! I've only taken pictures with my mobiles and a lame old Olympus digital camera I had. I say had 'cause Nikon had a sale here today and they would give you $150 trade in on whatever camera you had, so I traded that in for a new D3200! They'll also offered $100 cashback and a free wifi adaptor so I couldn't refuse it. Never had a SLR before and from the few hours of ownership I can tell it will be a steep learning curve! hahaha Anyway, a post means nothing without pictures so I'll post some "good" ones I got but they're all from my phone (Samsung S3) and I suck. All in all, I was pretty happy with them... hopefully will improve with the new gear! A wedding I attended and somehow this picture came out: Getting artistic (aka 'drunk') at the swimming pool Random dude on a practice day The Opera House from the boat The Harbour Bridge during the Vivid Festival And this one sucks as a picture but I just can't get passed this bball court in the middle of the Harbour and almost in front the Opera House...
7/18/2013 7:35:45 PM I reckon the Race is Crutchlow's to lose... Yes Valentino used to rule Laguna Seca but his is not on the same form as before yet. Whether that's due to setup or not, I don't know. On top of that, Pedrosa and Lorenzo (I'm guessing they'll both race) won't be 100% and especially won't be willing to push too hard due to recent injuries... That leaves Marquez but the kid has never raced on that track before since Moto2 and Moto3 don't go there so Cal has that edge. Then again, it's MotoGP and MM is freak. He might just be fast from the get go.
