4/3/2012 3:46:20 AM Yeah definitely Koji3.. There are a lot of the benefits to being a local (ie: getting awesome value out of your season passes), but at the same time many of these contra out when you're living on the hill.. For example you pay around 25-50% extra for groceries.. And long-term accommodation is expensive. It's costing us $24k for 5 months. It definitely makes sense to do what you can afford and what will get you the most ride days. And if that's jumping on a plane to NZ then that's what we have to do!
4/1/2012 2:08:28 AM Falls and Hotham have also done the $699 season pass for this year. I can give a comparative based on Falls Creek.. Lift Ticket = $106 for a day pass/$185 for the weekend. If you live within 100km of the mountain you can also get a locals alpine pass for $350 + $35 a day. Cheaper still if you bought the Hero Pass for $699. Entry to mountain = $39.50/day or $260 for the full season if you buy the resort entry season pass. Hotel/Hostel = Karelia from $80/night inc breakfast. Lakeside from $80/night inc breakfast and from $113/night inc all meals. Riparoo from $122/night for students and $152/night for adults including all meals. Alpha Lodge from $66/night. Food = Depends on your price range. Pub meals can be found for less than $20 and they're all massive. You can also find lunch for around $5. There are stacks of great drink specials if you know where to look. Transport = Depends on where you live. Falls Creek Coaches does trips up the mountain from Mount Beauty for $58 return (including resort entry) and you can park your car in their locked car park for $5/night which is far cheaper than the per night resort entry parking price. You then also don't need to pay for chains. Falls also provides a time benefit. The extra $ you pay to stay on mountain means you can get out on the hill at 8:30 without having to spend time on a bus getting up the hill each morning. And anyone who says the night life sucks obviously hasn't spent a Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday night at The Man, a Wednesday night at Fryers or been to Oishii/Astra at all. Yeah all venues close early (you can thank Liquor Licensing for that).. But by 1:30am if you've been riding all day and not used to it you'll be wrecked anyway.
1/12/2012 4:37:31 AM I am lucky - My friend was up there working and sending me updates from her staff accom which was next door to mine, envious! I think they only got a sprinkling off and on, enough to cool the ground enough to settle overnight, so probably 1cm all up? Still more than Whis and most of the US got yesterday! You can tell it's been snowing, it's freezing down here in the valley! Did anyone catch this awesome vid from Whis-Blackcomb this morning? It's absolutely mint! Video Here
1/10/2012 10:51:18 PM IT'S SNOWING! Sure, it's January and nothing will come of it.. But it's always good to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel! How's everyone's summer going?
1/8/2012 3:48:19 AM Happy New Years everyone! :) Five months til the opening of season 2012.. Yeww!
12/19/2011 4:24:25 AM No official title, I don't think.. I guess I could chuck a 'B Bus (Acc)' behind my name if I decided to get a little bit fancy! It's the best feeling. But now I have to decide what to do next. Contemplating post-grad in eco-tourism.. Mountains is where I want to be for the next bit.. The extra year would be worthwhile!
12/18/2011 4:17:32 AM I personally don't wash my gloves. They don't smell the greatest, but considering they've been worn for close to 100 days Winter just gone they're doing pretty well. I usually just make sure they're hung in the drying area as soon as I get inside, or put them in front of the heater for a bit so I don't have to put on wet gloves again the next morning. If it's really bad though, get something like an old pair of stockings and put some bicarb soda in it and tie the ends. The bicarb absorbs any moisture and also removes pretty much all of the smell. This works great for boots too.
12/18/2011 4:08:16 AM Woohoo.. Officially graduated uni last Friday.. Stoked! Headed back up to Falls today and caught up with my boss and some of my mates who are still up there. Also did the hike out to Ropers lookout. Well worth the walk, keen to do it early next season before we get the decent snow falls. Bjvinson - I'd probably consider it highly unlikely given they couldn't really get it working and running that well in Melbourne.
12/18/2011 4:05:35 AM I just bought a heap of stuff for myself online and got the family to pay and wrap it up for me.. So far on the list: - Some chicks tall tees - New headphones - Pipe gloves Requested money from the rest so I can buy new boots and some Sorels at the start of the season.
12/5/2011 6:05:06 PM Awww yeah, I saw that when I checked it out just after I posted - Bad luck! Though it does look like they're literally building mountains a the other one near Melton that's using Snowflex rather than man made snow! Either way.. That'd be rad! Yupp.. And on it far too much.
12/5/2011 3:27:34 AM I don't live in America, I'm in Australia. We get meager reception anywhere outside the village because we're completely isolated. We can have up to full reception on the mountain but still not be able to send a message. Also hofferm83 - Check your resort website, they might have an app for your resort specifically.
12/4/2011 1:22:35 AM Sounds good in theory, but not necessarily apt. Over here we get rubbish reception on the mountain. Texts won't send on less than half reception, but you can make calls on one bar. But seriously, time and place generally works.
12/2/2011 3:11:35 PM Wow that sounds amazing Wilz - You're gonna have a blast! I guess that would price it fairly similar to Japan then (if you go for dorm accom and Hak>Nis) I think you get three or six months for the binding voucher anyway, don't you? But I guess they won't get anything new in now til Aug/Sept next year! Anyone been to City Snow Park yet? Really keen to go.. Not keen to lug a board down all the way from home to find out they're closed again.. Next snow's lookin like Season 2012 Falls for me. Think I might try wakeboarding over summer - Need a board fix, and longboarding/skateboarding isn't really that big here.. It's still kinda looked down upon and none of my mates here are into anything board-wise.
11/28/2011 12:42:40 PM Just to clarify, the Rudy Project goggles do NOT go over your glasses, they have the same insert as the Adidas ones...
11/28/2011 3:47:32 AM Oakley don't, but Rudy Project make goggles with prescription lens inserts that clip into the nose bridge with an adaptor set. Not the coolest design, but for practicality purposes and quality lens variety - Probably a goer. Here's the link.
