3/27/2015 6:11:19 PM Actually, we need it to snow for our longer-term water reserves. The few HUGE storms that hit northern Cali dumped a TON of precip (rain) along the coastal mtns, in the interior valleys, and Sierra foothills. That equated to those reservoirs filling up a bit more compared to the low levels they've been at. But because so much of the rain was squeezed out, there wasn't much moisture left to dump tons of snow in the mtns. Our snowpack is currently at ONLY 9% of average. As Sir Charles Barkley would say, That's turrible! It's pretty dire, imho. Statistic source: http://ww2.kqed.org/news/2014/12/15/its-raining-so-how-do-those-reservoirs-look
3/26/2015 6:59:46 PM So who watched the one ref eff up an otherwise entertaining free card last weekend? I just watched it off my DVR. Glad the early stoppage got changed to a No Contest. I hope the 2 fighters get to run it back.
3/26/2015 6:43:27 PM Yeah, I mentioned Sierra's closure last week, which is why my last post was about adding Sugar Bowl to the list making more & more of us..... FYI: Here's a link to a list of projected closures: http://www.onthesnow.com/sierra-nevada/projected-closing.html Diamond Peak is shutting down this Sunday. And I'm honestly quite shocked that Alpine is next on the list. I recall them typically being among the last in Tahoe to call it quits. What I liked was that they ran lifts an hour earlier than normal (8:00 instead of 9:00), then shut down earlier as well, like at 2:00 or 1:00. On a good note, Bear Valley has done a stellar job of keeping their available terrain in great shape this season! Their snow mgmt crew has been killing it! Here's a short clip of the VERY LIGHT snow shower on Tuesday afternoon: And here's my stat sheet for my day there...http://snow.traceup.com/stats/u?uId=244439&vId=1374704
3/26/2015 6:23:08 PM While it's been years since I've ridden in VERY LATE spring conditions, I've had the best results with Zardoz NotWax.A few years back when I did a 2-day overniter in Tahoe, I picked up a few single-use wipes (http://www.zardoznotwax.com/products/single-use-notwax-speed-swipes) at a shop up there. On the 1st day, I was bogged down pretty bad by lunchtime, so I just cleaned up the gunk (dirt, pollen, etc.) with some base cleaner at lunch. This only helped for a handful of runs. So after wrapping up Day 1, I asked the service tech at the shop for his recommendation. Since I did my usual hot wax with Hertel Super Hot Sauce (an awesome universal wax) before heading up, it had held up nicely all day and didn't need redoing. I simply cleaned up the base with some cleaner and a TON of elbow grease. Then, in the morning before heading out for Day 2, I used the Zardoz wipe. Awesome results! With very similar conds as the previous day, I wasn't accumulating gunk as quickly as the day before. Although I really didn't have to, I did the same process as the day before: At lunch, I cleaned up any gunk w/ cleaner, but this time I added a treatment of a Zardoz wipe.
3/19/2015 1:49:39 AM Add Sugar Bowl to the "closed for the season" list as of this coming Sunday, 22 Mar. I've got an annual trip planned to Bear Valley on the 28th & 29th. I'm kinda worried they'll close before then. I may hafta pull the trigger a week early to use my other voucher this Sunday instead.
3/19/2015 1:42:52 AM Cuz I just saw that he's gonna be on Jimmy Kimmel tonight, I remembered another funny cat.... Hannibal Burress.
3/18/2015 5:14:13 PM Saddest, indeed. While it's a downer that my lift ticket voucher will very likely go unused, that other sliders have one less resort to visit over the next few weeks, and that the many, many seasonal employees are now out of work, I am WAY WAY more concerned about the state's water supply. The snowpack for the entire Sierra Nevada range is only at about 12% of normal. This is the 4th straight drought year. No bueno all around. No bueno. Oh, and here's a link to a local TV news story about this early closure that ran a couple days ago (includes video but I dunno how to link clip only)...http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2015/03/16/drought-forces-sierra-at-tahoe-to-cut-its-season-short-due-to-lack-of-snow/
3/18/2015 3:34:32 PM  <---- Me @ news that Sierra suspended winter operations on Monday. Essentially, they're closed for the season unless we get a GINORMOUS amount of snowfall before their original projected closing date of Sunday, April 12th
3/9/2015 1:35:51 AM Rode Kirkwood on Fri. Although not the coverage I'm used to seeing, the slopes were in decent shape. In general, on the firm side. I wish I could've been up there on Monday right after the recent dose of snowfall. Woulda been killer to slash some fresh pow! But it should be great spring shredding for the next month!
3/9/2015 1:30:44 AM Steph was ridiculous with that dribble amidst 4 defenders, then popping a step-back three. http://streamable.com/gcy1 <---Click this to have your jaw dropped.
3/8/2015 11:18:39 PM I concur with Mike on Super Hot Sauce, but the most bang for your buck is actually the (25) 1-oz. bars (http://www.hertelskiwax.com/Super-HotSauce-Ski-Wax-p/hotsauce-2doz-ski.htm) instead of the 3/4-lb brick. bars... $39.95/25 oz = $1.598 per oz.brick... $20.95/12 oz (or 3/4 lb) = $1.745 per oz.
3/4/2015 5:43:02 PM Another batch comedians I dig are Rich Vos, Jim Norton, Bobby Slayton & Steve Hofstetter. And while I like their actual material, what really kills me is when they cut hecklers down to size. The aforementioned Zach Galifianakis is a master of heckler takedowns. Look up any of this stuff on YouTube. The insulting comebacks are hilariously ruthless!
3/2/2015 5:26:56 PM TWELVE DOLLAR TUESDAYS at Bear Valley http://www.bearvalley.com/news/12-tuesdays-are-back Every Tuesday in March, lift tickets are only $12 ! ! ! 2/20/2015 5:39:24 PM I think wholesale testing of the entire roster would be a good thing. It could mean GSP might return, eh? Btw, anyone catch the free card last wknd?Bendo executed his gameplan well. If he had not been able to avoid Thatch's aggression & damage in the early rounds, I didn't have much hope for him.Hopefully, Thatch learns a lot from this fight. He shoulda listened to his corner a bit better btwn the 1st & 2nd or 2nd & 3rd when they told him to dial down the power and instead turn up the speed & quickness of his striking. I think he woulda had Bendo on his bike even more, and catch him w/ lesser shots yet still do some damage. He still has plenty of upside & room for growth.
2/20/2015 5:26:44 PM HOLY CRAP! (swidt?) And how did no one mention how the sh!t literally hit the fan?
