4/23/2010 11:39:04 AM So I've been wondering a little bit about ICS and its influences on the flex of the board.  As far as I understand, the channel is constructed of a single piece of aluminum running down the length of the board.  I know aluminum is a fairly flexible material, but my intuition says that such a large chunk of it running down a good length of the board must affect the natural flex of the board.  I feel like it'd kill the flex right under your feet, especially for softer boards.  In which case, might the 4x4 system or, *gasp*, even the 3D system, preserve the original flex of the core better? Does anyone know if ICS actually affects a board's natural flex in any substantial way or is it completely unnoticeable?  I've got a 2009 uninc, and it seems to flex predictably, but I really have no real equivalent comparison.  Has anyone ridden the same version of a board with and without ICS (e.g. 2009 Custom vs. Custom ICS)?  Perhaps it doesn't matter, but I've been curious about this for a little while now.
4/19/2010 10:44:48 AM Not sure if anyone's interested in the new 2010 iPhone, but it looks like Gizmodo got their hands on one.  It was apparently found (after being lost, presumably, by an Apple employee) by someone in a bar in Redwood City disguised in a fake iphone 3GS case, and, I'm guessing, subsequently sold to Gizmodo (for a hefty profit).  There's no way to know for sure if this is all real though. It has a front facing camera, larger rear camera, camera flash, higher resolution screen, second noise cancelling mic, separate volume buttons, 16% bigger batter, and a whole cosmetic makeover.  It's got a lot harder edges than the 3G or 3GS and a completely flat back like the original iPhone.  Apparently, it was also running OS4.0 before it was, supposedly, remotely wiped by Apple. I've never really been a fan of Apple products until the iphone, and I love the idea of the open source Android OS, but I must say, this thing looks sexy (both in terms of features and appearance).  After dropping my current 3G to glass-shattering consequences, I can't wait until this thing is released. And I also wonder how much of a beating the employee, who got too drunk to remember to not forget his super-secret new prototype iphone at the bar, got from his bosses.  Sucks to be him/her.  Oh, the full article is here: http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone
4/15/2010 10:27:02 AM I just saw this video of a 3-year-old snowboarding and I have to say he's quite impressive.  I wish I had even experienced snow when I was this young.  I haven't seen this posted previously, but the video's a few months old so it might have been thrown up here previously.  Just thought I'd share. That video reminded me of the part in Warren Miller's Dynasty for the 9-year-old girl who snowboards.  Awesome.
3/11/2010 6:31:38 PM So usually people give their weight and people recommend board lengths.  What would happen if we try it the other way around?  This could be an insanely stupid "game", but what the heck.  Here are my boards lengths: 155 Uninc152 Sierrascope155 Reverse Crew From this, can anyone guess my weight?  It'd be interesting to see whether people think I'm heavy, light, or just right for these lengths. So I guess the first person within 3lbs of my actual weight can post their boards and we'll continue guessing.  Or everyone can post their board lengths and we can all guess.  Or we can just let this thread die.
1/12/2010 5:41:08 AM Not sure if you guys have seen this (saw it on slickdeals), but Tanga is selling some face masks for pretty cheap ($5+shipping). http://www.tanga.com/products/reversible-neoprene-half-masks-one-size-fits-most The clown one is awesome.  I couldn't resist and picked up a couple.
11/20/2009 2:15:40 PM Has anyone gone to the Boston Ski & Snowboard Expo yet or is anyone planning on going this weekend?  I've really got nothing better to do, so I might just drop by today or tomorrow. http://www.bewisports.com/expos/boston/ And what do you know, it's sponsored by Subaru.
7/8/2009 9:46:37 AM So it looks like google is finally putting out their own operating system:  Google Chrome OS http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html It's supposed to be a super web-oriented, lightweight OS for netbooks and people who do everything on the internet.  Seems interesting.  It's built on a linux kernel with their own graphical user interface/window system on top. It'd be pretty interesting to know how their OS will compare to the standard linux distribution.  It's supposed to start up really fast, and let you get on the internet just as quickly.  We'll see if that actually happens.  I think they're trying to get it out in late 2010.  Google's really trying to take over, aren't they?
6/9/2009 1:11:59 PM Okay, so here's the deal.  In about a month, I'll be attending my good friend's wedding.  It'll be the first wedding I've gone to with people who are all near my own age (all the previous weddings I've gone to have been of uncles and aunts who have been significantly older). My question: Is it easier to pick up chicks at such a wedding like all the movies seem to suggest (wedding crashers style)?  Does anyone have personal experience on this subject matter?  If so, any tips?
5/24/2009 10:37:51 PM Any chance you guys are getting any 09 Burton boards in anytime soon?  I'm thinking of picking up a uninc, but you're all out of the 155s.
4/13/2009 10:46:40 AM So there's this book I'm reading called "The Singularity is Near" by Ray Kurzweil (a well renowned scientist/engineer) who believes that in 25 years, since technology is increasing at an exponential rate, we'll be able to create computers which are as, if not more intelligent than human begins and will be able to learn and interact in the same way we do now.  He also believes that the exponential growth in the neurosciences and understanding the brain will also allow us to create an artificial brain which can augment or completely replace our own brains making us as smart as technology would allow (in around 25 years as well). In essense, this would mean you would be able to live forever because we could put your consiousness on a computer, and with the advances in cybernetics and robotics, we could create an artificial body that experiences the world in the same way as your human body does. In an effort to promote philosophical discussion (although this may be hoping for a lot), let's say this day actually comes in 25 years.  Would you put your consciousness into a machine so that you could "live forever"?  Do you even believe this could happen?  If we replaced every neuron in your brain with an artificial "neuron" which behaved exactly the same, would you still be the same person? There's actually an independent movie out about this book/author:
4/7/2009 8:57:50 PM I thought it might be cool to post some random optical illusions and various other trippy things here.  Some people may have seen these before, but I still think they're awesome. First, watch this video and remember what sound the guy is making: Now, play the video again, but close your eyes while it's playing. Neat huh?  It's call the McGurk Effect --------------------------------- Here's another interesting one. See if you can carefully count the number of passes the white team makes.   You have to count carefully. Watch Video Here Check your answer (in white) -> Did you see the guy in the gorilla suit?
3/22/2009 10:45:35 AM So yesterday while I was out riding, my friend rammed into the side of my board at high speed (accidentally) causing this little divot in my heelside edge and it also caused the ptex to warp slightly into a bump right next to the damaged edge.  I didn't notice it until the end of the day, but it seemed to ride okay.  I'm not sure if it'll effect how my board rides, but do you guys have suggestions on what action I should take if any?  Is there any way to repair this at all?
3/19/2009 11:01:57 AM So I just found this article on BBC news talking about compulsory helmet use at ski resorts.  Some states require helmet use for minors when biking so such a requirement isn't completely unprecedented.  Most think helmets are a good idea, but do you think mountains should require helmets be worn?  This is of course in reaction to Natasha Richardson. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7953165.stm Personally love my helmet, but don't really want anyone to tell me I have to wear it.
3/17/2009 12:05:15 PM This is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in a while.  AIG's doling out $165 million in bonuses to their execs essentially with the bailout/TARP funds.  Sure, bonuses in the financial sector are almost like normal salary for the rest of us, but these people would have had no job if it weren't for the bailout funds.  Using taxpayer money to compensate the exact division which helped bring the meltdown of the insurance company?  Absurd.  Obama's encouraging lawmakers to block the bonuses from going through.  A senator (Grassley) even said the execs should "resign or commit suicide."  There's a lot of rage flying around. http://www.reuters.com/article/wtUSInvestingNews/idUSTRE52G4FQ20090317 http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE52G3BQ20090317
3/12/2009 9:04:41 PM I'm planning on heading up to Wawa on Saturday and either Sunapee or Loon on Sunday.  Anyone planning on heading up either of those days or have suggestions on where to go on Sunday?  I'm hoping the conditions are okay and not too slushy/icy.
