Snowboard Trick Tips: How to Score the Basic Air

Jumping is one of the most fun things you can do on a snowboard. The feeling of weightlessness, if only temporary, is one of the highlights of riding on snow. But the consequences of landing off balance can be drastic. So watch this quick video to learn the basics of catching air, then get out and try it.

Check out the Learn to Snowboard Thread on the forums to ask Doug Questions about scoring your next Snowboard Trick.

Stanky13 Stanky13 - i watched this a long time ago but never really payed any attention to it since i was no where near the jumping level. now i can see myself going fast enough to catch a little air off of certain hills and experimenting in the baby park. so i will put these tips into use on tuesday during my next visit

Omitson Omitson - Most of those ramps taken look like a bit more then basic air. The techniques described all apply to the very basic jumps nonetheless! Very nice video.

dougfagel dougfagel - TunnelSnake01 - You need to KNOW that you are going to hit the landing when you hit any jump. This comes in part from experience and using your head when hitting any feature. Know the needed speed and pop for every feature. This can be learned by watching and pacing other riders hitting a feature.

TunnelSnake01 TunnelSnake01 - Thanks for the vids Doug, they're really helpful. Quick question tho - I've started getting smaller airs down but I worry about hurting myself in the act of chasing longer hang time. Any tips on building up confidence?
2283 days 22 hours 10 minutes ago
dougfagel dougfagel - Great!! It does have to do a lot about mileage and quality practice. As jumps get bigger your window for needed movements gets smaller. Make sure to practice precision in your movements.

JandJBlks2k JandJBlks2k - Doug, you're awesome dude! I've been trying to do the jump since last season..but would always land on my behind! this year, I finally got it down!! that extra few secs on a flat board really do make a diff..Just have to gain more confidence and speed for more air! Thanks again!
